Tax fight heads toward expected deal: aides | Reuters

(Reuters) - Democratic and Republican lawmakers skirmished on Friday over plans to extend a payroll tax cut seen as crucial to a fragile U.S. economic recovery, but aides predicted a last-minute deal.

While independent economists say extending the tax cut would boost the economy at a critical time, both parties have been struggling to agree on a compromise deal in a rerun of this year's budget battles that have knocked investor confidence in Washington's ability to deal with its fiscal problems.

Both parties are under pressure to strike a deal at a time of economic difficulty. Failure to do so would mean an effective tax hike for millions of voters in 2012, when Republicans and Democrats will face off in presidential and congressional elections.

"The optics politically to be seen blocking an extension of payroll tax is lousy - and neither wants their fingerprints of blame on it for not getting it done before Christmas," said Ethan Siegal of The Washington Exchange, a private firm that tracks Washington for institutional investors.

Senior party aides predicted on Friday that common ground would be soon be found to extend a reduction of the payroll tax, which helps fund the Social Security federal retirement program, and renew jobless benefits for millions of Americans.

We should totally raise taxes so the businesses that are still in the US can finally stop that whole producing things and employing people thing.....what are they thinking anyway...being productive...don't they know where they live?

Another Rick Perry brain freeze? Justice ‘Montemayor’ is an activist, he says | Iowa Caucuses

Gov. Rick Perry Friday stumbled on the name of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor — calling her “Montemayor.”

And he also said during an editorial board interview with The Des Moines Register that there are eight instead of nine Supreme Court justices.

In claiming that Sotomayor is an activist judge, he struggled for six seconds to come up with her name, and then called her “Montemayor” before one of the newspaper’s staffers helped him.

Later in the interview, he stated the incorrect number of justices.

“I trust those independent school districts to make those decisions better than eight unelected and frankly unaccountable judges,” Perry said in discussing school prayer.

Lindsay Lohan 'Playboy' cover: a fruitful train-wreck career? | PopWatch | EW.com

Lindsay Lohan's 'Playboy' cover: Is this the beginning of a fruitful train-wreck career?

Back when I first heard that Lindsay Lohan would be posing nude for Playboy, I was sad. It seemed a desperate act for a once-promising young star, a final appeal for fame from someone with no other options. It seemed this could be Lohan’s last hurrah, the last time her name would grace a magazine cover (at least, until some sort of tragedy struck). But now, just one day after her Playboy cover leaked on the Web, rocketing Lohan to the top of Internet searches, I’m realizing this could hardly be the end for Lindsay Lohan. This, in fact, could launch the beginning of an entirely new career for the Mean Girls actress.

Get your mind out of the gutter. I’m not referring to that kind of career. No, instead, Lohan could use this opportunity to transform from good-girl-gone-bad to bad-girl-gone-entertaining. In this day and age — when audiences can’t get enough of booze-fueled disastrous antics of the Jersey Shore cast — it’s not unthinkable that Lohan could carve out a fruitful career for herself as a professional train wreck.

Lindsay Lohan is really a train wreck...I feel so sorry for her. Fame is not always a good thing.

The war on Christmas explained | Nealz Nuze | www.boortz.com

If you’re paying attention – and with the menace in the White House more and more Americans are paying attention – you can’t have failed to notice that there is a war on Christmas going on, especially in government.  In Maine the Governor has decided that the Christmas Tree in the Capitol Rotunda is a “Holiday Tree.”  In Ft. Worth, Texas we have school administrators telling teachers that no depictions of Santa Claus will be permitted in classrooms.

I can exceed all bandwidth available to me detailing the attacks on Christmas.  Better to tell you why this is going on.

It’s simple.  Just look at the cast of characters.  You have government and liberals behind the attacks … almost exclusively.  And why?  Simple:  Because it’s government we’re supposed to worship, not God.  It’s government we’re supposed to look to for support in rough times, not our church.  It’s government we’re supposed to look to for comfort, not our faith.  In fact .. our faith is supposed to be in government, and government doesn’t like competition.

Growing Grass in the South? – Gotta Have the Right Kind

Growing grass in the Greensboro area can be tough, but not impossible. Success starts with choosing the right grass to plant. Our hot weather, long summers, and frequent dry spells can make getting the picture perfect lawn very difficult; even for professionals. Just look at your average golf green in August!

In addition to the heat and lack of water, Holly Springs, Apex, Cary, and Fuquay Varina have varying kinds of soils ranging from really hard clay to very sandy loam. Each type of soil does better with a different kind of grass.

Just because it is hard to do, doesn’t mean it cannot be done though. You can make any kind of grass grow anywhere, if you have the time, patience and, especially, the money to do so. Choosing the correct kind of grass for your specific area and climate will make it much easier. The article below talks about some of the different grasses that do well in southern climates.

Great Scott! What a good article

Landscape Design; A Quick Study Of Open Spaces

Landscape Design; A Quick Study Of Open Spaces

At Lawn Care Greensboro, we know that landscape design is art, somewhat like painting a picture.

If you’ve ever taken an art class you realize that a first-class painting has a focus or main idea around which all other features revolve.  The other pieces inside the painting function to produce a setting or enhance the central focal point or idea.  The same is true of landscaping.  When contemplating your yard plan, consider a picture of what you need to be the main target and design all pieces around that picture.

For instance, do you want a sizable expanse of flawlessly manicured lawn reminiscent of an English country manor? Open yard areas are calm and soothing places.  They impart a sense of stylishness and understated style that we will make the point of interest for this particular design.

This “open effect” can even be achieved in undersized lawns.  In truth, it really is more vital in small lawns because open spaces make everything look larger.  Should you cover your landscape with a bunch of design pieces, like trees, shrubs and plant beds, it may begin to look sloppy and disorderly.  The general result can make your lawn look small and messy.

A lot of times, less is more.  A single tree or a couple small plant beds can add a decorative touch and finesse to a yard without shifting the focus.  To that end, do not center trees in your yard if possible.  Allow them to fade more into the lawn and highlight the landscape, not dominate it.  When deciding on your trees keep in mind your core point of interest; the lawn.  Attempt to locate a variety that isn’t too overshadowing, has a lovely shape and perhaps something else fascinating about it (like its leaves, flowers, fruit, or bark).

The Catalpa tree is an excellent example.  It has broad leaves and exquisite white flowers with a touch of yellow.  It also offers these awesome seed pods that stay on it until winter and give it a very charming appearance.  This tree has a couple great design features throughout the seasons.

Other examples of cool and appealing trees are the Ash (bright berries), the Sugar Maple (brilliant foliage), Tulip tree (gorgeous blossoms), the White Birch (cool bark), and the Copper Beech (awesome leaves).

You can also get a lot of great shrubs and flowers that can add interesting and appealing pieces to your landscape.  Just keep in mind, for this technique, less is more.  Settle on just a few eye-catching features and use them to highlight your landscape and you will have your neighbors commenting on the elegance and class of your yard before you know it!
